The underground cavern and aquifer system of northern Puerto Rico is unique in its class. But this underground world is threatened. Contamination, urban development and construction of dams have caused the disappearance of some of the species that inhabit these ecosystems and have rendered some aquifers useless as a fresh-water source.

Yesterday, 21 Puerto Rican parrots raised in captivity were set free as part of a program that aims to strengthen and help re-establish the population of this endemic bird. The endangered population of the Puerto Rican parrot barely reaches a total of 200 individuals, including those in captivity.

Construction of the Molecular Sciences Complex makes history

"The University of Puerto Rico officially announced yesterday the construction of a molecular sciences center that will have 90,000 square feet with laboratories, to further the development of scientific research in the Island." This represents the first institution in Puerto Rico built with the purpose of housing research laboratories.

Is the coqui really a threat for Hawaiian birds?

The Puerto Rican coquí has apparently arrived to stay at Hawaii, and state authorities are looking for alternatives to eliminate it, alleging that the amphibian "is going to compete for food with the honeycreepers, native insectivorous birds." Herpetologist Juan A. Rivero, a coqui expert, comments on the subject in El Nuevo Dia today.
