We are proud to announce the release of “Mentoring Up: Strengthening and Expanding Mentor-Mentee Relationships”, a FREE online video course focused on helping scientists manage and strengthen their mentoring relationships. The new course was developed by the Yale Ciencia Academy—a recently concluded NIH-funded program that for 10 years supported the professional development of doctoral students—in collaboration with the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) and Science Communications Lab (SCL).

What is it about? The new course is led by Drs. Fátima Sancheznieto and Kermin Martínez-Herńandez, mentorship initiative leaders and CIMER-certified facilitators. Through 8-short videos and activities, participants will learn how to strengthen their mentoring relationships, evaluate gaps in their mentoring needs, create a plan to recruit new mentors to support their career development, and address common challenges in mentoring relationships. Mentees will find answers to such questions as:

  • How do I build and maintain healthy mentoring relationships?
  • How do I recruit new mentors for areas where I need more support?
  • How can I identify and address conflicts in my mentoring relationships?

Who is it for? The course was designed with doctoral students in mind, but its concepts, principles, and strategies can help scientists at any stage! The course can be completed in 6-9 hours and can be done over a few days or weeks, taking into account a scientist’s busy schedule.

How can you implement the course? The course can be taken independently or it can be offered to groups for “flipped classroom” discussions. Educators, facilitators, program directors, summer program coordinators, faculty in mentoring roles, or student organization leaders can now use our course facilitation guide to enhance and complement the video course through in-depth group conversations around mentorship!

Mentoring Up is the final course in the series Professional Skills for Proactive and Engaged Scientists, developed by Yale University and the nonprofit Ciencia Puerto Rico in collaboration with SCL, and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Additional courses in this series include: The Strategic Postdoc, Strategies for Effective Public Engagement, and Career Planning for Early Career Scientists
