Electron Microscopy Research Technician

 

A position of Electron Microscopy Research Technician is available in the Electron Microscopy Facility of the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC).  UCC is a fast growing private Medical School in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Our research community investigates various ultrastructural aspects of synaptic transmission and neurological diseases.    

Description: Under the general supervision of the Director of the EM Facility, Dr. Thomas Schikorski, the incumbent will perform the following functions in our EM facility: Provide technical assistance to users, provide services like sample preparation and sectioning; Training of users in image acquisition and basic TEM embedding procedures. Operates and maintains functionality of the transmission electron microscopes, microtomes and other related laboratory equipment. Maintain stocks of reagents and laboratory supplies.

Since we apply molecular biology techniques to transgenic mouse models it is important that the applicant is willing to work with biohazardous material and has no allergies to small rodents.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of techniques for the preparation of biological tissue for light and electron microscopy including chemical fixation, staining and embedding. Comprehensive knowledge of and skill to use transmission electron microscopes, light microscopes, and ultramicrotomes.
  • Knowledge of the theory and techniques of immunogold labeling and immunoperidoxidase is a great plus.
  • Basic knowledge of tissue structure on an anatomical, cellular and molecular level. Skill in serial ultramicrotomy and in the use of glass and diamond knives.
  • Ability to perform maintenance on electron microscopes and light microscopes.
  • Skill at performing small animal surgery including tissue biopsy, vascular perfusion, and intravenous microinjections.
  • Knowledge of digital photographic techniques including visual arts productions, copy work, photographic printing and enlarging, and slide making.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is a great plus.
