Application deadline: December 15, 2016

If you have specific questions about the training workshop, please contact: Alex Ropelewski at (412) 268-4960.

The workshop will use a mixture of lectures and practical sessions to help participants select and use  bioinformatics tools for analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data.

This workshop is ideal for those planning future NGS projects or for those having NGS data in need of analysis.

Prior knowledge of NGS is *NOT* necessary. In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Use the Galaxy web interface
  • Assess the quality of NGS data
  • Submit NGS data to NCBI repositories
  • Assemble “de novo” a prokaryotic genome
  • Annotate a prokaryotic  genome
  • Classify a microbiome dataset
  • Use visualization tools to understand assemblies and features
  • Gain access to free supercomputing resources for coursework,  and research projects

Limited financial support in the form of lodging and/or transportation may be provided to workshop participants from minority serving institutions through the National Institutes of Health Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) grant: T36-GM-095335.

TO RECEIVE FINANCIAL SUPPORT PARTICIPANTS SELECTED MUST MEET NIH MARC T36 PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES. To receive support, participants must be U.S. citizens, or non-citizen nationals (a non-citizen national is a person who, although not a citizen of the United States, owes permanent allegiance to the US. This is generally a person born in a land that is not a state, but that is under U.S. sovereignty, jurisdiction, or administration -- for example, American Samoa) or permanent residents. An individual lawfully admitted for permanent residence must possess an alien registration receipt card (I-551) prior to participation. Individuals on temporary visas, those seeking asylum, or refugees are not eligible for support from this MARC T36 Program. Financial support is limited to transportation and housing. Stipends are not provided by the program.
