2024–25 Civic Science Fellows Positions

Open for applications

We are excited to be in the process of announcing positions in the 2024–25 Civic Science Fellows cohort, which will launch in spring 2024. As 2024–25 host partners open applications for Fellows, we are sharing them on the Civic Science Fellows website and in the Civic Science Series newsletter. We invite you to spread the word via LinkedIn and with your networks.

Envisioned as a Civic Science Lab, Fellows and partners carry out pioneering work to co-create pilots, partnerships, knowledge, models, and new ways of working that can help seed collaborations between science and society. All Fellows will engage as a cohort in a learning program and community, developed in collaboration with the network and an interdisciplinary committee of advisors.

Open Positions (list in formation):

Climate Central is seeking a 2024–25 Civic Science Fellow to bridge climate science and coastal communities. The Fellow will connect with a wide range of coastal stakeholders, such as city planners, community leaders, and climate justice groups, to inform and promote free online tools designed to support coastal resilience, using stakeholder feedback to better meet community needs. This full-time, 18-month Fellow will collaborate closely with external partners and Climate Central’s internal team of scientists and science translators who use science and technology to make climate change relevant and show what can be done about it. Applications are due January 12th. Learn more and apply here.

The Open Environmental Data Project (OEDP) is seeking a 2024–25 Civic Science Fellow to focus on open data and environmental data governance. The Fellow will build on opportunities identified by OEDP team members to prototype and pilot ideas, and prepare workshops, training, and curriculum to support environmental data literacy and usability. The overall goal of this position is to collaboratively work with OEDP team members to develop first-hand experience working across different scales of governance, and to research and develop materials on scientific and information projects. This is a one-year fellowship beginning no later than March 1, 2024. Applications are due January 17th. Learn more and apply here.

The Advanced Science Research Center at the CUNY Graduate Center is now accepting applications for a 2024–25 Civic Science Fellow to help research, analyze, and expand the work of the IlluminationSpace Hub. The IlluminationSpace Hub is designed to foster deep, ongoing collaboration between CUNY STEM and New York City communities, make science more responsive to local needs, and provide pathways to STEM education and careers for underrepresented and under-resourced groups. This full-time, 18-month Fellow will develop an ecosystem map identifying connections and value propositions, and design a civic science model that can be scaled and reproduced by other public universities that aim to make STEM more accessible and inclusive. Learn more and apply here.

The Franklin Institute is now accepting applications for a 2024–25 Civic Science Fellow to lead the design, planning, and implementation of a project to co-create professional learning experiences for climate and environmental science education. In collaboration with local teachers and community leaders, the Fellow will develop curricular connections, learning strategies, and training to build educator capacity and confidence in civic science. This is a full-time, 18-month position for someone with an environmental science background who is interested in the investigation and public communication of emergent issues in science, society, and planetary health. Learn more and apply here.

Ciencia Puerto Rico is now accepting applications for a 2024–25 Civic Science Fellow to advance understanding of how to build strong and inclusive civic science partnerships, particularly with marginalized communities, and ensure this knowledge is broadly shared across networks. The Fellow will support the assessment of CienciaCoLab, a collaborative and participatory program that provides tools, workshops, mentoring, and seed funding for leaders in Puerto Rico to design and implement community science projects. For this 18-month position, CienciaPR is seeking a native Spanish speaker (or someone with similar proficiency) with experience and interests in evaluation, citizen science, public engagement, science communication, outreach, and other aspects of civic science. Learn more and apply here.

Princeton University Graduate School is now accepting applications for a 2024–25 Civic Science Fellow to work with the GradFUTURES initiative to advance equitable pathways to opportunity for Ph.D. students. This full-time, 18-month position will focus on special projects and analysis to better understand the impact of holistic professional development opportunities, developing insights to inform efforts at Princeton as well as graduate institutions across the country and the world. As part of the Princeton Graduate School team, the Princeton GradFUTURES Civic Science Fellow will collaborate with staff across Princeton University as well as other partners. Read the announcement and apply here.

The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) is now accepting applications for a 2024–25 Civic Science Fellow to advance institutional capacity-building through the Seeding Action initiative, designed to catalyze and support science centers, museums, and public engagement networks to cultivate a culture of hope and action for planetary health. The Seeding Action Civic Science Fellow will lead the design, planning, and implementation of a project that builds capacity to implement public engagement efforts in ways that increase planetary health impact—including the interlinked challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and air, soil, and water pollution, as well as implications of these issues for human lives and society. This is a full-time, 18-month position ideal for someone with experience leading collaborative planetary health action projects. Learn more and apply here.
