Research Engineer (Spacecraft Systems)

Morehead State University, located in Morehead, Kentucky in the foothills of the Appalachian

regional university in the South. We are accepting applications for a full-time standing position as
a Research Engineer (Spacecraft Systems) in the Space Science Center.

Responsibilities: Assists in the effort to design, develop, and test nanosatellites and
nanosatellite system. Supports space systems development projects undertaken by the Center
by providing engineering design, development, fabrication, integration, and testing efforts related
to space systems. Develops grant proposals to facilitate research goals established by the
Center. Serves as assisting engineer on NASA and DoD contracts and assists in design efforts
and reviews (requirements reviews, engineering design reviews, etc.), develops documentation
related to these reviews, and attends and participates in technical interchange meetings with
partners (government and private aerospace sector). Works to establish collaborative
relationships and partnerships with NASA and the private aerospace community. Supports
special projects (i.e. grants and contract projects) undertaken by the Center by providing
engineering designs, specifically related to grant and contract development, implementation and
reporting. Mentors undergraduate student research and design projects for students and
engages in activities that promote the space program at MSU. Teaches classes in space
science, space systems development, and astronautical engineering.

Qualifications: The Research Engineer will hold a Master’s (required) in aerospace
engineering, astronautical engineering, space science, space systems, or related discipline. At
least 1 year of experience in satellite or other space systems development or satellite mission
support is required. Familiarity and experience with spacecraft environmental testing that
typically is required of small aerospace vehicles is required. The candidate should have skills in
using software packages for mathematical analysis such as MatLab, Mathcad, Excel, etc. The
ability to write coherently is a must.

Desired Qualifications: Ph.D. in astronautical engineering, space science, space systems, or
related discipline preferred. Experience in space systems design in either government or the
private sector is preferred. An established record of publication in refereed journals is desired.
Experience in grants and contract development from federal agencies is desirable. Competence
in CAD design and layout programs such as Solidworks and Autocad is desirable. Computer
programming skills are desirable. Knowledge of control systems is desirable.
