The goal of the Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP) is to ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to assume leadership roles in science, including college and university faculty who have the responsibility to develop the next generation of scientists. The EXROP Program links the resources of HHMI's Science and Science Education departments to provide bright, motivated undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds and groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences with outstanding summer research experiences. HHMI continues to work with EXROP students after their summer study programs to encourage them to pursue careers in academic science.
Eligibility
Application to the program is by nomination only from an HHMI professor, a director of an HHMI-funded undergraduate program at a college or university, or faculty contact at an active Science Education Alliance (SEA) school. Each year, approximately 125 scientists volunteer to mentor EXROP students in their labs during the summer. In addition to doing laboratory research, the students attend two meetings at HHMI’s headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD, to present their research in a poster session.
The EXROP program is open to students who are from racial, ethnic, and other underrepresented groups in the sciences, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students can only apply for the EXROP program after nominated by an HHMI professor, a director of an HHMI-funded undergraduate program at a college or university, or faculty contact at an active Science Education Alliance (SEA)school. Once accepted into the program, students are matched with HHMI scientists who have volunteered to provide mentored research experiences. EXROP students may be eligible for continued support in a second summer research experience in the same lab and in their doctoral education via HHMI's Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study.
Award
- 10 weeks of full-time research in the lab of an HHMI scientist
- $5,000 award
- Participation in a local summer research program with other undergraduate researchers
- Long-distance travel and housing arranged and paid for by HHMI
Program Outcomes
Since EXROP’s inception in 2003, 732 undergraduates from 152 colleges and universities have been matched with 214 HHMI investigators, professors, group leaders, and early career scientists. Of the 506 EXROP alumni who have earned a baccalaureate degree 228 went into graduate programs.
