SCIENCE WRITER AND SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

The Science Writer and Social Media Manager will have two primary responsibilities: writing for the Society’s print and online publications and emails and managing social media. Specifically, this person will write for the ASCB newsletter, track scientific developments of interest to members, write member communications about Society initiatives and meetings, and post relevant information on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. This position reports to the Director of Communications and Education and is located in Bethesda, MD.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Writing and Editing 70%

Serves as principal writer of digital and print articles of interest to ASCB members.
Identifies topics, researches (including interviewing experts), and writes on scientific and social

issues.
Identifies photos to accompany articles.

Inputs select articles and photos into the website content management system.
Monitors the daily content of scientific journal eTOCs.
Helps writes informational emails to ASCB members and nonmembers to keep them current on

ASCB activities.
Helps write marketing emails about ASCB meeting and program opportunities. Coordinates press work with Director of Public Policy and Media Relations.
Manages editorial calendar/pipeline for digital and print media.

Social Media 20%

Serves as primary manager/source of ASCB Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn posts.
Works with graphic designer to develop graphics to accompany postings.
Tracks and analyzes appropriate measurements to determine success of media relations efforts.

Copyediting/Proofreading 10%

Assists with copyediting and proofreading letters, emails, and marketing materials generated by ASCB staff.

BACKGROUND

  • Master’s degree or higher in biological sciences or related field or equivalent experience.

  • Understanding of cell biology and related fields.

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience writing on scientific issues for both scientific and lay audiences.

  • Well versed in issues related to life science and science funding.

  • Excellent, engaging written and oral communication skills.

  • A “doer” with a keen sense of urgency, excellent follow-up, and extreme attention to detail. 

    • Works well under pressure and on tight deadlines while maintaining professional relationships with colleagues at all times.

    • Demonstrates an interest in ASCB’s mission.
