The Janelia Science and Training group creates and manages a range of dynamic and innovative scientific programs and activities that foster collaborations, intellectual interactions, and a culture of leadership development.

About the Role:

The Scientific Outreach and Communications Manager will report to the Director of Scientific Programs, and will work in close collaboration with others in the Office of Scientific Operations and Programs. The successful candidate will engage and educate the scientific community about Janelia and its Scientific Programs through various modes of outreach.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of all components of Janelia’s Scientific Programs, including their unique goals and offerings.

  • Work with key individuals at Janelia to build and implement an outreach strategic plan that is regularly reviewed and adjusted based on the evolving priorities of Janelia’s Scientific Programs.

  • Design, manage, and implement creative outreach efforts and activities.

  • Expand awareness for Janelia’s scientific programs by actively engaging with relevant target audiences, using the appropriate channels with accurate, impactful, and timely content.

  • Cultivate relationships with colleagues across Janelia and with key external organizations (e.g., scientific societies).

  • Give presentations about Janelia’s offerings at various institutions and scientific events.

  • Compile metrics on outreach activities and their impact and adjust priorities and strategies accordingly.

What You Bring:

  • Doctoral or professional degree (PhD or equivalent) in a scientific field is required.

  • Experience working in a scientific environment or research organization is required.

  • Experience communicating with both a scientific and lay audience about science is required.

  • Experience developing and implementing stakeholder outreach strategies is preferred.

  • Experience developing a variety of outreach materials, including but not limited to content for webpages, social media, email blasts, posters and videos is preferred.

  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and strategic decision-making skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – particularly in communicating with multi-cultural audiences
