DESCRIPTION of DUTIES

Bureau of Public Health Laboratories (BPHL) works closely with other public health laboratories through the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and Center for Disease Control. The purpose of this position is to: 1. Provide bioinformatics support/pipeline development for BPHL (detailed further below), 2. Provide bioinformatics support for Public Health Laboratories in the Southeast region (6 states) including webinars and onsite support within the framework of the larger consortium.

 

The incumbent should have practical and technical experience in microbial, viral, and public health bioinformatics, including the deployment, validation, configuration, and development of customized bioinformatics workflows.

 

Plans and executes analytic research projects, establishing new standard operating procedures if necessary.

 

Identifies novel methodologies, measures, and research questions for assessment and summarization of findings.

 

Selects appropriate analysis techniques and measures, can identify and implement the necessary software and databases to complete defined analytical tasks.

 

Develops, manages, and curates databases for analysis.

 

Identifies, implements, and maintains data quality control and management programs.

 

Directs/coordinates other bioinformaticians involved in complex analysis projects, including data sharing and engagement across multidisciplinary project teams.

 

Provides technical assistance on the use of complex data analysis techniques and methods.

 

Disseminates the results of research projects in a wide range of venues including publications, peer reviewed journals, summaries, manuscripts, and special reports.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing. 

Knowledge of procedures, techniques and equipment used in lab testing and analysis. 

Knowledge of the method of data collection.

Knowledge of Python programming.

Knowledge of Galaxy tools.

Knowledge of industry standard cloud based computing resource.

Ability to communicate effectively. 

Ability to work independently. 

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. 

Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Ability to build workflows within Galaxy.

 

 EDUCATION

Masters  - PhD preferred
