Description

A summer opportunity is available at the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, Division of Applied Research Technology, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Workplace exposure biomonitoring is important in occupational safety and health. Current NIOSH projects involve methods development for biomarker assays using cell culture techniques which may provide quicker assessment of exposures to occupational hazard. The successful summer fellow will investigate occupational exposures to diesel and urban particulates, and their effect on human respiratory system. The fellow will be working with immortal human lung epithelial and fibroblast cell lines to determine effect of particulate exposure on cell viability, cytotoxicity and apoptosis. The fellow will learn culturing, passaging and working with cell lines, performing various end point assays using commercially available kits (cytotoxicity, apoptosis) and microscopy. In addition, he/she will be doing literature searches, planning and carrying out experiments, troubleshoot and problem solving, participate in lab meetings and presentation.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree program in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry required
• GPA of 2.5 or higher required
