PAHO/WHO Calls for grant applications to support health policy, programs and systems

The Communicable Disease and Environmental Determinants of Health Department and The Evidence and Intelligence Unit of the Pan American Health Organization, along with the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (Alliance HPSR), and the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) invites grant applications to support research on how to improve health policies, program and systems in the Americas. The grant is titled Embedding Research for the Sustainable Development Goals (ER-SDG).

The research grants are for a maximum of $30,000. The application deadline is 15 May 2018.

This initiative seeks to facilitate improvements in health programs, policies or systems by generating knowledge through research that is embedded within existing activities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Applications are accepted on any topic (i.e. communicable diseasesnoncommunicable diseases (including cancer)child and maternal health, emergency preparedness and disaster relief, among others) related to the SDGs from low- and middle-income countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The grants are intended for individuals responsible for program implementation in public institutions, such as district health officers and program managers, who wish to improve the efficiency a health program, policy or system. Rather than funding conventional types of research, the grants are intended to support the embedding of research within existing processes and activities.

Close collaboration between researchers and program managers is to be considered when possible. Grant funds may be used to cover the costs of researchers’ time or data collection activities (they may not be used to pay for additional staff within the program).

More information on the call, eligibility criteria and proposal templates are available on PAHO’s webpage.
