Amigos y colegas,

Sinceramente,

Mónica I. Feliú-Mójer, Ph.D.

Friends and colleagues,

Just over a decade ago, the local and international community rallied to stop U.S. Navy military exercises in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Despite this important victory, Vieques still suffers the effects of having been shelled with bombs and toxic chemicals from 60 years of military practices. The health of the residents of Vieques is deplorable and they face a serious environmental and public health crisis. However, the U.S. government continues to ignore this crisis and does not even have a plan of action on how to resolve it. Therefore it is necessary that we once again come together for Vieques, to demand immediate action from the U.S. government and to demand that President Barack Obama keeps his promise (made in 2008) to remedy the crisis in Vieques.

Recently our colleague Daniel Colón Ramos, a professor at Yale University, wrote a letter to President Obama demanding that he fulfills the United States’ outstanding debt to Vieques. I urge you to do the same. Below you can find the sample letter—which you can customize—and the list of officials from the White House to whom you should send it to, to demand solutions for Vieques, now.

Sincerely,

Monica I. Feliu-Mojer, Ph.D.

Dear ______________:

I write you to urge that President Obama fulfills his pledge to the people of Puerto Rico and provides for a prompt and full cleanup and decontamination of Vieques, as well as address the public health and environmental disaster affecting the U.S. Citizens living in there.

For over sixty years, the island of Vieques was shelled continuously with tens of thousands of bombs and toxic chemicals. As a direct result of these U.S. Navy military activities, the people of Vieques live in one of the most contaminated and toxic places in our planet. Their health is deplorable, much worse than the rest of Puerto Rico.

The continued delays in the cleanup of Vieques aggravate the man-made disaster created by the U.S. Navy. I demand adequate and urgent action to solve this crisis afflicting the people of Vieques, Puerto Rico.
