Bienvenidos a CienciaPR, una red de recursos para todos los interesados en las ciencias y en Puerto Rico.
I am a senior student in the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo currently working in a Bachelor of Science degree with Major in Microbiology with emphasis in Clinical Microbiology. Some of my previous work has been based on the determination of the concentration and electrophoretic profile of total salivary proteins from individuals that smoke versus those that don't. In summer 2011 I participated in the Biomedical Summer Research Program from Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, FL, under the guidance of Dr. DeEtta Kay Mills. My research was based in the determination of the effects of copper on the antibiotic resistance and susceptibility of soil bacteria. From August 2011 to May 2012 I worked with Dr. Maiella Ramos in the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo (UPRA) determining the tolerance of the rhizobacteria isolated from the aquatic plant Salvinia minima to the heavy metal cadmium. This research was sponsored by the Puerto Rico Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PR-LSAMP) Mentored Undergraduate Research Experience Program. In summer 2012 I participated in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Program from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (UK COP), under the guidance of Dr. Steven G. Van Lanen. My research area was drug discovery, in more specific terms, natural product bioorganic chemistry. I'm currently working with Dr. Mari L. Acevedo in the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo in a research project in molecular biology and biochemistry.
