I obtained my PhD at Jodrell Bank Observatory of the University of Manchester, UK, in May 1970. Between 1970 and 1992 I worked at (a) the University of Bolgna, Italy; (b) Dacorum District Council (UK) in housing research; (c) the Max Planck Institut fuer Radioastronomie, Bonn, Germany; (d) the Very Large Array, NRAO, Socorro, NM, USA; (e) Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bangalore & Ooty, India; (f) The 12-m mm telescope, NRAO, Tucson, AZ, USA; (g) Instituto de Astronomia Milimentrica, Granada, Spain; and (h) Green Bank Observatory, NRAO, WV, USA. In 1992, I joined the staff at NAIC/Arecibo Observatory as Head of the Radio Astronomy Group, a position that I stepped down from in 2004 to concentrate more on scientific research. I was also an adjunct Full Professor of the Astronomy Dept., Cornell University between 1996 and 2006. I am now a Senior Research Associate at Arecibo Observatory.

I am married to another astronomer, Tapasi Ghosh, who is also a Senior Research Associate at the Arecibo Observatory. We have one daughter, Pia, who was born in Arecibo and is presently (Aug 2010) at high school in Hatillo, PR.
