Bienvenidos a CienciaPR, una red de recursos para todos los interesados en las ciencias y en Puerto Rico.
I am about to complete a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minors in Environmental Science and Secondary Biology Education ('22) at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Aguadilla Campus. I have worked under the mentorship of Prof. Odalys S. Álvarez-Pérez, studying antimicrobial resistance genes in Enterococcus spp. isolated from coastal ecosystems and oysters and with Dr. Rubén J. Hernández-García, studying the population of the Puerto Rican slider (Trachemys stejnegeri stejnegeri) and analyzing water quality and stream bank soil nutrient content in Quebrada Los Ramos, in Rincón, PR. In 2019, I worked with Dr. Elizabeth Padilla-Crespo, isolating and characterizing by biochemical and molecular methods phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) from pigeon pea rhizosphere with the purpose of using PSB in agricultural crops to increase the bioavailability of phosphate and avoid the use of chemical fertilizers and soil salinization and in 2016, I worked in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, studying the potential of the white lead tree (Leucaena leucocephala) to phytoextract an over-the-counter aspirin/paracetamol/caffeine drug from drinking water.
Recently, I worked under the mentorship of Dr. Stuart Jones studying bacterial and whole-water respiration rate in two lakes with different trophic states in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and trained in aquatic, forest, insect and vertebrate ecology at the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center in Land O' Lakes, WI. In 2019, I worked as a field research technician at Montclair State University's New Jersey School of Conservation in Branchville, NJ, where I assisted in the mark-recapture data of four northeast turtle species and trained in northeast reptile and amphibian field ecology.
I was the president of the Student Society for Environmental Science and Toxicology from 2018 to 2019, now I am the treasurer and education and community relations coordinator. I am member of the American Society of Microbiology, the Ecological Society of America and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science.
I have worked as a science tutor for TRiO Upward Bound, a federally funded educational program, and as a biology and environmental science tutor at the STEM Center on campus.
