Bienvenidos a CienciaPR, una red de recursos para todos los interesados en las ciencias y en Puerto Rico.
I am currently a second year graduate student in Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU). My interest in research started in second year of college by volunteering in Caroline Appleyard’s laboratory at PHSU. This was my first research experience through which I learned several molecular techniques as well as the management of rats. As a volunteer I had the opportunity to worked in a project related to the involvement of stress on endometriosis condition. This research experience resulted in two abstracts accepted for a poster session at the Annual Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego, California and in the Annual District Convention of the National Society of Biology (βββ). After I completed my requirements for a BS in Biomedical Sciences (GPA: 3.50) from the University of Puerto Rico, Ponce campus in May 2015, I decided to pursue a graduate degree and to continue doing research specially in the area of endometriosis. Currently, I am graduate student and RISE-fellow trainee at PHSU. I successfully pass all my classes in first year (GPA: 3.70) and now I am writing my proposal in order to defend it next August. I work in Dr. Flores Laboratory and my proposed research is focused in epigenetic and endometriosis. My future goals are to become a successfully independent scientist and be able to motivate and inspire youth to enjoy, understand and pursue science,
My proposed research is focused in understand how histone methylation- H3K27me3-may regulate the development of vesicles in rats with endometriosis. Therefore, we also proposed to conduct a pre-clinical trial to test the efficacy of a pharmacologic EZH2 inhibitor, as a novel non-hormonal treatment for endometriosis using a validated animal model. In addition, I will study the levels of histone methylation in samples of women with endometriosis and non- endometriosis (controls) to assess their potential used as a diagnostic marker.
