Bienvenidos a CienciaPR, una red de recursos para todos los interesados en las ciencias y en Puerto Rico.
I am currently enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey, and I expect to finish my Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences-General Program by June 2015. My greatest interest lay in the field of Microbiology and Genetics, specifically in the topics of Virology, Microbial Pathogenesis and Antimicrobial Agents. My goals are to acquire a Ph.D. in one of the fields previously mentioned and develop myself as a successful scientist.
My current research focuses on environmental microbiology, bacteriology, bioinformatics and virology. I currently TA a group of students in a bioinformatics project on the annotation of genes from diverse species of Drosophila, a project sponsored by the Genomics Education Partnership (GEP). I also work with isolating novel strains of bacteria and bacteriophages from the tropical soils for Puerto Rico. These organisms are purified and then characterized by DNA extraction and sequencing. In addition, we work on a project in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh to determine the gene essentiality towards lytic growth of bacteriophage genes of unknown functions through genome wide mutagenesis.
