Bienvenidos a CienciaPR, una red de recursos para todos los interesados en las ciencias y en Puerto Rico.
My name is Mairim Soto-Ortiz and I live in Carolina, Puerto Rico. I studied a Master of Public Health (MPH), and I received my undergraduate education at the University of Puerto Rico, where I majored in Health Sciences (BS) and Ophthalmologic Technology (AD). I currently work in the Office of the Assistant Dean of Research and Research Centre of the School of Dental Medicine as a Research Assistant and Study Coordinator of a study about the Orofacial Malformations in Puerto Rican Children. And currently, I am pursuing my doctorate degree in Epidemiology. My plans are to conduct research in craniofacial defects and other fields related to epidemiology, which will contribute to the public health of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanic populations.
Mairim Soto is currently working on a research about the oral and craniofacial disorders in Puerto Rican children known as FaceGenes. The prevalence of oral clefts in Puerto Rico (15.9/10,000) is higher than in other populations (Puerto Rico Health Department, 2012). To date, there is a lack of epidemiological studies that evaluate the role of genetic and maternal exposures in oral clefts risk in Puerto Ricans.
