ASM/NSF UFRI AWARD TO INBRE FELLOW Filipa Godoy-Vitorino

 

Dr. Filipa Godoy-Vitorino, an Associate Professor at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Metropolitan Campus and PI of the Microbial Ecology and Genomics Lab, was awarded the Undergraduate Faculty Research Initiative (UFRI) Fellowship supported by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Leaders Inspiring Networks and Knowledge (LINK) program.

Filipa was recognized at the National level, as a model of excellence in STEM research, and a stellar example of an active researcher committed to student learning in undergraduate biology.

Dr. Ríos Velázquez at the UPR- Mayagüez receives award for mentoring students

Dr. Carlos Ríos Velázquez, professor at the UPR- Mayagüez will receive award for mentoring hundred students through his career at the Society for Advancing Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Conference in Maryland.

Dr. Ríos Velázquez also serves as the SACNAS-UPRM faculty mentor.

Adail A. Rivera Nieves is a graduate student at the UPR Mayagüez that received a fellowship by The Hydrographic Society of America for his thesis: Implementation of an Unstructured Three-Dimensional Circulation Model for San Juan Bay Estuary. Adail works under the supervision of Dr. Miguel Canals Silinder.

De la UPRM las Caras de las Biociencias en Puerto Rico

Con motivo de la celebración de la Séptima Semana de la Biociencia en Puerto Rico, la doctora Rosa J. Buxeda Pérez y el doctor Carlos Ríos Velázquez, catedráticos del Departamento de Biología de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM), fueron reconocidos como las “Caras de las Biociencias en Puerto Rico”.

Durante la lectura de la proclama para celebrar esta área del saber, unas de las principales fuerzas de desarrollo económico de la Isla, se otorgó por primera vez dicho reconocimiento a dos pilares de las biociencias, cuyo compromiso y liderato han promovido el avance de esta disciplina en Puerto Rico.

UPR MSC recieves Grant from the NIH for Biomedical Research

Ayudando a comunidades a tener agua potable segura para su consumo

Durante años el Centro de Educación, Conservación e Interpretación  Ambiental (CECIA) de la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, bajo la dirección de la Dra. Graciela Ramírez-Toro, ha está enfocado en el tema de proveer agua potable segura a comunidades en Puerto Ricos. En la Isla existen alrededor de 300 acueductos comunitarios pequeños que no son manejados por la Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados de Puerto Rico (Non-PRASA). CECIA ha estado  monitoreando  la incidencia de parásitos y patógenos causantes de enfermedades gastrointestinales en las fuentes de agua de algunos de estos acueductos.
