Dangerous political precedent: Research could be affected by budget changes impossed on the University of Puerto Rico

In what could be a dangerous political precedent, the Legislature of Puerto Rico decided to limit the budget of the University of Puerto Rico by $40 million dollars. Since 1966 the budget of the UPR has been decided according to a financial formula, which this year would have resulted in 9.69 % of gubernamental income. In the past this formula had guaranteed fiscal autonomy of the University of Puerto Rico from the transient political games and pressures in the government. However, this year the Legislature decided to limit the budget of the UPR by $40 million dollars, a move will affect, among other things, scientific research
