UPR chemistry students recognized at ACS

Six student chapters of the American Chemical Society of the University of Puerto Rico where recognized at the 233rd American Chemical Society National Meeting celebrated on March 25 in Chicago, Illinois. The six chapters, of different units of the UPR system, where awarded for their performance during 2005-06. The student chapters of Rio Piedras, Humacao and Aguadilla were awarded in the outstanding category –the maximum recognition granted by ACS-, while Cayey, Arecibo and Mayaguez were recognized in the commendable category.

Talking about the brain drain

The Department of Social Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez held a forum titled The brains that leave… to discuss the brain drain specialized talents from the Island. Most of the people that leave the Island are trained in Science and Engineering, and decide to leave searching for better pay and labor opportunities. There are two kinds of brain drain: a good one and a bad one. The negative brain drain contributes to the deficit in certain areas of the work force that are necessary so that Puerto Rico can accomplish its goals in the knowledge based economy, while the good brain drain is the one that allows students to go and complete their studies or work in the United States and come back with years of experience.

Those verses from Bobby Capó's song "SoÒando con Puerto Rico" transport us with their melody to the coasts of Puerto Rico. While taking this trip down memory lane, we relive the experience with the same intensity as if we were physically there. How is it that the brain allow us, just by thinking about it, to feel the tropical sun and dream of Puerto Rico?

In December's issue of the prestigious scientific journal Learning and Memory three articles by Puerto Rican authors were published, and those articles address these mysteries of the human brain.
