The Secretary of Economic Development, José Pérez Riera, defended himself against lawsuit allegations saying that he and other government officials "sequestered" the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, saying that the decisions regarding those funds were made together by the governmental and private trustees of the institution.

Thomas F. Farb, former executive director of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust has filed a Federal lawsuit against José Pérez Riera, Secretary of Economic Development, and several other government officials, under allegations that the Fortuño Administration "sequestered" at least $100 million of the Trust's funds with the intentions of using them for purposes different to those established by the law that created the Trust.

The ASM Committee on Graduate and Postdoctoral Education welcomes applications for its 2013 ASM Scientific Writing and Publishing Institute. Planned for March 21-24 in Washington, D.C., the institute is open to senior-level graduate students and early-career postdoctoral scientists.
