Cited from Prensa RUM Titled "Breaking borders and barriers in engineering: education, technology and practice ", the activity will be celebrated from June 21-23, 2006 at the UPRM campus. “In the event, the director of UPRM, Dr. Jorge Iván Vélez Arocho, will assume the presidency of the governing body of the organization that groups 50 institutions of the Americas and Spain." "Diverse subjects such as bioengineering, sustainable engineering, biotechnology, agricultural engineering, infrastructure engineering, and academic curriculums in this discipline, will be discussed. Participation of more than 300 people of about 15 countries is expected. This activity recognizes UPRM and Puerto Rico’s efforts to promote the areas of research, education and service in sciences. In addition, it provides the RUM a unique opportunity to promote our culture and "the interchange of faculty and students, joint investigation and support initiatives of educative standards, like accreditations" The main speaker of the activity will be Dr. Arden L. Bement Jr, director of the National Foundation of Science, who will speak on the direction and world-wide mission of research. Also attending is Dr. James Houston, director of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, and presidents and directors of several universities.
