September 30th, 2006 Symposium: “Embracing Diversity
through Effective Teaching and Mentorship.”
This sounds like a great activity to attend if you are in the tri-state area- specially since it will be on a Saturday- you will not have to take the day off from lab or work.
See below for details-
Dear Colleagues,
The Future Science Educators and the Sackler Institute’s Post Doctoral
Association with sponsorship of NYU School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity
Affairs are pleased to invite you to participate in our first Diversity
Symposium, on Saturday, September 30th, 2006 at NYU School of Medicine.
This Diversity-focused day is designed to help participants understand the
realities and benefits of diversity. Our goal is to help participants become
more aware of how differences between people affects the character of teaching
and mentoring, learn how to recognize when racial and gender barriers are
affecting students and mentoring relationships, and learn effective ways of
communication and interaction with people different from ourselves.
Participants will come away with tools to address some of the specific
challenges in communicating with, motivating, assessing, retaining and
promoting a diverse target audience.
The event will begin at 11:00AM and lunch and afternoon refreshments will be
provided.
Further event information and registration may be found at
http://www.med.nyu.edu/sackler/fse.
If you are not available to attend, please pass this invitation on to someone
you think might be.
We encourage you to attend this symposium, join in the discussion, and help to
chart new directions in our increasingly diverse workforce and society.
Sincerely,
Bob Tillman
