The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader to be director of the Basic Sciences Program (BSP) in the Division of AIDS (DAIDS). The director is responsible for planning, implementing, and directing an extramural program of basic and applied preclinical research supported by grants and contracts to advance research on HIV pathogenesis, immunology, and the epidemiology of HIV disease, as well as drug discovery and development. The director formulates an overall scientific agenda for basic research in HIV/AIDS, recommends resource allocation among competing initiatives, and continually assesses and reorients program activities and priorities to be responsive to changing research needs or redefined policies. The BSP director coordinates and communicates with other components within the division to ensure timely and accurate interchange and/or transfer of scientific information and is responsible for ensuring that the research supported by the division is integrated and complementary with other programs within NIAID, NIH, and other federal agencies. The director provides supervisory and administrative oversight to three scientific branches with more than 20 employees and a research portfolio of nearly $200 million.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a biomedical science. In addition, the candidate must have demonstrated skills in 1) working both independently and collaboratively in planning, organizing, and conducting basic research in HIV/AIDS pathogenesis, immunology, and/or epidemiology; 2) serving effectively in research program administration; and 3) effective communications and collaborations. Competitive candidates will be widely respected by their peers for their scientific and managerial or executive accomplishments and expertise.

The maximum annual base salary is $200,000, with a maximum total annual compensation limit of $230,000.
