Advance your faculty career in the neurosciences with research training and mentorship from world renowned researchers.

Apply now to the UC San Diego Leading the Advancement of Underrepresented Neuroscientists for Change (LAUNCH) program, an all-expense-paid research and mentoring training program sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). LAUNCH includes in-depth training in grant writing to enhance faculty career and funding success. This one-year commitment begins with a Summer Institute from July 11-22, 2022, followed by a 2-day Mid-Year Meeting and second Summer Institute in 2023, in San Diego. Participants will choose one of three research tracks: Alzheimer’s disease and Related Dementias; Cellular, Developmental and Molecular Neuroscience; Computational and Systems Neuroscience. The program is designed for early career junior faculty and transitioning postdoctoral scholars who have scientific expertise in the neurosciences and are from groups underrepresented in the biomedical workforce, including women, persons with disabilities, underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Deadline to apply is March 1, 2022.

LAUNCH will employ evidence-based strategies to enhance professional development and effective mentorship of participants by:

  • developing a Faculty Research and Career Advancement Plan (RCAP) to help mentees identify short- and long-term research and career goals
  • engaging participant mentees in effective mentorship with a mentoring team consisting of a UC San Diego research faculty mentor, a UC San Diego career faculty mentor, and a mentor from the trainee’s home institution
  • improving participant mentees’ knowledge and skills in areas important for research success in neuroscience

LAUNCH will enhance self-efficacy in research knowledge, skills, and strategies to successfully obtain NIH or equivalent grant funding by:

  • immersing participants in effective strategies to develop research program plans
  • facilitating the development of skills in writing effective grant proposals and manuscripts
  • providing important tips on navigating pathways for academic advancement as well as submission and review of both journal articles and grants

100% of LAUNCH participants surveyed agreed that the overall quality of the Summer Institute was excellent, and the experience was valuable for their long-term career goals. 100% would recommend the Summer Institute to a friend or colleague.
