NINDS Office of Training, Career Development and Workforce Diversity Announces Upcoming Job Opening in Rockville, MD

Please be aware that NINDS in a few weeks will advertise a Health Program Specialist position at www.usajobs.gov. The position falls within the Office of Training, Career Development and Workforce Diversity, Division of Extramural Research, of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The Office of Training, Career Development, and Workforce Diversity (TCDWD) supports the training of students (high school, undergraduate and graduate), postdoctoral fellows, clinician- scientists, and faculty across NINDS research areas. The Office develops training opportunities and provides programmatic support through grant awards, local and national workshops, and direct consultation with applicants and awardees. The Office also has specific programs to enhance diversity of the neuroscience workforce by supporting individuals from underrepresented ethnic/racial minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds, individuals with disabilities, and individuals re-entering the biomedical research workforce. The Health Program Specialist will regularly engage with students and scientists at all levels of research, across all NINDS research areas, and from many different extramural communities, through venues such as professional and scientific societies, conferences, and workshops, as well as via responses to phone calls and written communications.

Successful candidates need to demonstrate initiative, independence, creativity, sound project management skills and ability to prioritize and successfully complete multiple projects in a timely manner. Candidates will need to develop a comprehensive understanding of a wide variety of training grant programs and be able to advise members of the NIH and extramural community regarding the nuances of each. Health Program Specialists will gather data from multiple databases and complete thoughtful and timely analyses of the data to identify programmatic strengths and weaknesses.

Skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge and expertise in neuroscience or a related discipline (Ph.D. degree or equivalent)

  • Proven record of innovative and independent problem‐solving skills, combined with excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative work environment and across and

    within Institute committees in many capacities

  • Sound judgment and independent initiative;

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, both oral and written;

  • Ability to plan, implement and represent the organization at scientific conferences/workshops

    Effectively multi‐task, prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage critical issues in a dynamic environment, working both independently and as part of a team.
