Alice Francisco El Koury is an excepcional woman whose prolific scientific career did not halt her maternal instinct and her inmense joy of living in a time when being a woman in science was a handicap. Alice founded the Department of Microbiology of the UPR, the Puerto Rican Society of Microbiologists, the College of Medical Technologists of Puerto Rico, the Medical Technology Program of the University of Sagrado Corazon, among many other achievements.

Experimental harvests of peach and raspberry, part of a UPR in Mayagüez project, are starting to pay off. This project wants to introduce new fruit varieties in the Island to increase the local agricultural product offer. The kind of peaches and raspberries being harvested in Adjuntas and Lajas are varieties that adapt to the tropical weather.

Pall Life Sciences, global leader in the manufacture of filtration, separation and purification devices for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, announced the expansion of its operations in Fajardo, with a $58 million investment. With this expansion, the company could transfer to the Island all its filters manufacturing operations, which will cause an increase of 240 people in its workforce.

Pall Life Sciences has decided to bring all its medical, bio-pharmaceutical and biotechnology filtration devices manufacturing operations to Puerto Rico, to export to America and Asia. The company will expand its operations, with an $58 millions investment. The expansion includes the construction of a new warehouse for biomedical and biopharmaceutical filters, the enlargement of a clean room for the manufacture of medical and biopharmaceutical filters and ample spaces for manufacture and storage of industrial filters and office space.

Artificial protection for our coasts

Coastal erosion is a serious problem in our Island of Enchantment. Every time the waves break ashore they release energy capable of causing erosion and sedimentation; this, together with the bleaching and death of coral reefs, weakens the natural barriers that protect our beaches. Dr. Alfredo Torruella, one of the three doctors in oceanography in the Island, is trying to obtain the permits to build the biggest artificial coral reef in the world in the coast of Humacao. This coral reef will avoid coastal erosion, protect marine species that inhabit the area and provide recreational areas for snorkeling, surfing and diving.

Puerto Rico's Cancer Center takes form

The government of Puerto Rico donated 9 acres from the Department of Public Works and Transportation to the University of Puerto Rico to build the Cancer Center, which construction will take up to 39 months. At a cost of $75 million, this Center is part of collaboration with the MD Anderson Cancer Canter in Texas. The Center, which will be the first in the United States to study and investigate treatments specifically targeted to the Hispanic community. It will cover areas related to cancer research and treatment as prevention, early detection, diagnostic, clinical treatment and statistics registry.

Harmless tree, lethal name

The cannonball tree is an exotic especies introduced in Puerto Rico at the beginning of the 20th century. It’s scientific name is Couroupita Guianensis, and the tree gets its name for the resemblance of its fruit to the cannons used by the Spanish military.
