Dangerous political precedent that could affect research in UPR

Establishing a dangerous political precedent, this year, the House of Representatives chose to take $40 millions away form the UPR. Since 1966, to guarantee the UPR with fiscal autonomy from the political ups and downs and pressures, the UPR receives funding through a formula that, this year, equals 9.69% of the government revenues. However, this year the formula has been ignored, resulting in $40 million less for the main educational institution of the country. According to the Confederation of Associations of University Professors (CONAPU), this could affect research, among other things.

The Medical Sciences Campus (MSC) of the University of Puerto Rico announced today the establishment of a novel Mass Spectrometry laboratory that would make possible to run up to 30 tests to detect metabolic conditions of genetic origin in newborns.
