Cuban-born and PR-raised MD Anderson doctor Gabriel López Berestein has worked 25 years in developing new cancer treatments, including several new drugs. He is now spearheading efforts aimed at opening a comprehensive research cancer center in Puerto Rico.

Unlocking the mysteries of the brain

Grand slam! Three lab groups with P. Rican researchers published in this issue of L&M

"Si por casualidad duermes, y sueñas que te acaricia la brisa..."

Those verses from Bobby Capó's song "SoÒando con Puerto Rico" transport us with their melody to the coasts of Puerto Rico. While taking this trip down memory lane, we relive the experience with the same intensity as if we were physically there. How is it that the brain allow us, just by thinking about it, to feel the tropical sun and dream of Puerto Rico?

In December's issue of the prestigious scientific journal Learning and Memory three articles by Puerto Rican authors were published, and those articles address these mysteries of the human brain.

In memoriam: Iván Vidal González, an exemplary young Puerto Rican scientist

Iván Vidal González

Iván Vidal González was a fifth year graduate student at the Ponce School of Medicine, in the lab of Dr. Gregory Quirk. He passed away in August 25, 2006, in Cabo Rojo, swept by the sea while successfully and heroically saving his girlfriend's life.

As written by Dr. Austin-Dailey, "Iván had a lot of friends....he touched people wherever he went. He was the pride and joy of his family. He was a first-generation college student and took such pride in his work. He was a great student, a great guy, and a good friend to all of us here. Most of all, he was so proud of his family and of being Puerto Rican."

We have put together this memorial page to remember Iv·n, his work and his contributions to science. We also use this opportunity to advertise Iván Vidal González Fellowship.

May his life and work serve as an inspiration to future generations of Puerto Rican scientists.

Ivan Gabriel Vidal is "Google-able". For those unfamiliar with the term "Google-able", it generally signifies that a person is fairly important if you can type their name into a Google search engine and come up with pictures, articles, or sites that include said person. Ivan is one such important person. And when you Google his name, among the first search results it will produce is his profile on Ciencia PR.
