Dr. Hernández Ayala is a professor of geographic climatology at Sonoma State University

Climatology, the study of weather changes over time, is a prominent scientific field often cited in the media. Sonoma State University, in California, is one of several institutions that has a Climate Research Center (CRC-Sonoma), in which scientists from different disciplines collaborate to better understand the relationships between short-term atmospheric phenomena, the climate, physical geography and human geography. Notably, CRC-Sonoma is directed by a young Arecibeño scientist!

(New York, N.Y. – July 31, 2017) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added a former battery recycling facility in Arecibo, Puerto Rico to its Superfund National Priorities List of the country’s most hazardous waste sites. As a result of previous operations, the site is contaminated with lead, arsenic and heavy metals. Before it temporarily stopped operating in the spring of 2014, The Battery Recycling Company, Inc.

Arecibo - The Arecibo Observatory is the first line of defense against asteroids that could collide with earth and cause a global disaster. These events have occured in the past, leading to massive extinctions. These space rocks are analyzed by a radar at the Arecibo Observatory to obtain their size, composition, speed and trayectory.

It has been four years since the popular tourist attraction Cueva Ventana, in Arecibo, is one of the most visited places in the Island, for tourist and local residents. This ecotourism initiative is one of the few private natural resources that exist in the country, employing a team of 15 full-time. The development of the attraction has had low environmental impact.

Arecibo has plenty of natural resources but the lack of urban planification is endangering them. A new plan for urban planification has been developed by EPA and AEE to help alleviate the problem.
