Environmental microbiologist Elizabeth Padilla Crespo is the first Puerto Rican to be included in a book by the prestigious organization.


As a young girl, when her interest in science began to blossom while studying in the urban center of Mayagüez, Elizabeth Padilla Crespo did never imagined that her name would occupy the same pages as those dedicated to the greatest in the field, such as the Dutchman Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, recognized as the "father of microbiology".

CienciaPR’s Director of Science Education Programs is up for re-election to ASM’s Board of Directors

Dr. Greetchen Díaz-Muñoz, Director of Science Education Programs and Community Partnerships for CienciaPR, is a candidate for re-election to the Board of Directors of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). Díaz Muñoz was the first Puerto Rican and Latina to have been elected into the new governance of ASM and has served on the board for almost two years. Her re-election would extend her term for an additional 3 years. Díaz Muñoz is also the past president of the Society of Microbiologists of Puerto Rico, the local branch of ASM in Puerto Rico.

Dr. Greetchen Díaz will form part of the board of directors for the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. Diaz is currently the Research Grants Program Director for the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust (FCTIPR).

ASM/NSF UFRI AWARD TO INBRE FELLOW Filipa Godoy-Vitorino

 

Dr. Filipa Godoy-Vitorino, an Associate Professor at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Metropolitan Campus and PI of the Microbial Ecology and Genomics Lab, was awarded the Undergraduate Faculty Research Initiative (UFRI) Fellowship supported by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Leaders Inspiring Networks and Knowledge (LINK) program.

Filipa was recognized at the National level, as a model of excellence in STEM research, and a stellar example of an active researcher committed to student learning in undergraduate biology.

UPR-Humacao shines at annual biomedical research conference

Two students from the Biology Deparment at the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao Campus were awarded for their reearch presentations at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABCRMS) during November in San Antonio, Texas.

Giovani Deliz, junior in the General biology program and Raiza Reyes, junior under a Microbiology major were recognized along another 11 students among 1700 participant students. ABRCMS is one of the biggest research conference for underepresented minority students and is funded by the American Society of Microbiology under an NIH grant.
