The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) Intramural Research Program would like to offer an information session for undergraduate students across institutions in Puerto Rico. NIDCD conducts basic, translational, and clinical research on hearing, balance, taste, and smell. Through the NIDCD Speakers Bureau (learn more), NIDCD staff and trainees can deliver a campus-based session focused on career mentoring, graduate school pathways, NIDCD intramural research, and NIDCD intramural training opportunities. We would like to discuss this opportunity with academic programs in the life sciences across institutions in Puerto Rico, including Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Neuroscience, and related disciplines. If you recommend additional life-science programs with student interest in laboratory-based research, we would be glad to include them. Presentation Details

This session will focus on pathways to graduate and professional school and highlight how students can gain valuable experience and NIH intramural research funding along the way, including:

• How to identify and contact potential research mentors (find research groups aligned with student interests).
• How to find paid NIH research opportunities:
  • Summer Internship Program (SIP): 8-12 weeks of mentored research at NIH with hands-on techniques and poster/presentation opportunities.
  • NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP): Scholarship support plus paid summer research at NIH and a postbaccalaureate research year.
  • Postbaccalaureate IRTA (after graduation): 1-2 years of full-time, paid research at NIH with salary and benefits; strong preparation for graduate/medical school.
• Overview of NIH intramural training resources: workshops on scientific writing, data presentation, interviewing, career exploration; guidance on interacting with mentors (this session will highlight available resources and how to access them).
• Graduate training pathways to be aware of (for next steps):
  • NIH Graduate Partnerships Program (GPP) (e.g., NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars).

MU Alcohol Research Training Summer School & Internship
(MU-ARTSS) 

June 1-August 1, 2026
Travel days: June 1 & August 1    
Orientation days: June 2 & 3

The MU-ARTSS program is structured into a week-long didactic program (June 3-June 10, 2026) providing an intensive introduction to alcohol research followed by an 8-week research internship (June 11-July 31, 2026) in the lab of a MU-ARTSS professor. The program is set up to provide an independent learning experience and offer the intern an opportunity to get a sense of a ‘grad school’ working environment. The internship is full-time with a stipend of $5,200. Room and board are also provided at no cost to the intern. However, travel costs are not covered and are the responsibility of the intern. Interns will receive 1 hour of academic credit (course title: Special Problems in Psychology, Psych 2950) from the University of Missouri which is paid for by the program. If you would like to have your credit transferred to your academic institution, some educational institutions require prior approval before the start of an internship if students wish to count the credit hour towards their degree. Applicants should check with their institution regarding any such requirements before accepting an internship position.

 

The summer program contains four components:

1)  A week-long didactic program held in the Department of Psychological Sciences from June 3–June 10, 2026. Topics to be covered include both psychosocial and biomedical aspects of alcohol use and disorder, its causes, consequences and treatment.

2)  At the conclusion of the didactic program, MU-ARTSS students will be placed in internships from June 11-July 31, 2026 in the laboratories of addiction researchers housed in the Department of Psychological Sciences at MU. Depending upon students' interests, students will be placed in laboratories that focus on one or more of the following areas: (a) human genetics, (b) behavioral pharmacology, (c) psychiatric epidemiology, (d) neuroimaging, and (e) statistical modeling. In these internships, students will work alongside other interns, graduate students, and faculty members to gain experience in contemporary alcohol research that will provide valuable experiences in preparation for graduate study. This experience will culminate in a formal presentation to MU-ARTSS interns, faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and a poster presentation at the Summer Undergraduate Research & Creative Achievements Forum. 

3)  Weekly meetings with the MU-ARTSS group are held to update on the status of the project, professional development discussions, informal discussions on research topics led by faculty, postdoctoral and predoctoral fellows, and viewings and subsequent discussions of classic movies that portray the myriad of ways alcohol affects people’s lives and a Journal Club.

4)  Structured activities as part of MU-SURP on campus, including seminars, training in the responsible conduct of research, and professional development.
