Academic Leadership for Women in Engineering at WE14

October 24th and 25th

 

We invite you to attend the workshop, Academic Leadership for Women in Engineering which will be hosted at the WE14+ICWES16 Annual Conference in Los Angeles, CA, October 24 and 25. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) seek to broaden their current leadership development opportunities for women in academia. By hosting this day-and-a-half workshop, SWE intends to expand its programming for those pursuing leadership roles in academia.

Our goal is to have a diverse group of women faculty members attend this workshop. Through this workshop we hope to strengthen the community of practice that helps support and guide women leaders in academia. The workshop will tentatively run from 10 AM to 5:30 PM on Friday, October 24th and then from 9 AM to 12 PM on Saturday, October 25th. Lunch will be provided on Friday. 

Below is the current tentative agenda that has been designed specifically for women faculty leaders. The design of the agenda is based in part on recent surveys and focus groups conducted in partnership with ASEE. Through the day and half workshop we plan to spotlight and include 21st century best practices central to leadership in academia.

Saturday, October 25th

9:00 AM - 10 AM Value of Peer Mentoring in Academia

10:15 AM - 11:45 AM Strategic Finance: Lagging and Leading Indicators of Institutional Success 

11:45 AM - 12:00 PM Wrap-up & Closing

Participant Criteria:

The workshop is designed for women faculty who currently hold leadership positions or are seeking leadership positions in academic departments and divisions within the next five to seven years. Additional criteria for participants:

  • Is tenure track or tenured
  • May have some experience in or familiarity with personnel and budget matters
  • Interested in attaining a leadership position
  • Recognizes the importance of strategic risk-taking for career advancement
  • Realistically and continually assesses her leadership opportunities
  • Can expect advancement opportunities, either formal or informal, within her institution.

Space is limited, so we can only accommodate up to three women from a given university.
