Amigos y colegas,

Dear ______________:

I write you to urge to co-sponsor and support amendment 4293 to Senate bill S.2943. This measure will ensure a through scientific review to identify safer alternatives to the open burning, detonation and incineration of hazardous waste from military sites.

The Government Accountability Office estimates that 557,000 tons of old surplus munitions will need to be disposed of over the next few years. Many of the ingredients in these munitions are dangerous to human health, causing cancer, birth defects, reproductive problems, and other health problems. As a practice, the U.S. military currently openly burns or detonates many unspent munitions, in many cases creating large quantities of toxic waste and air particles near U.S. civilian communities. In recent years however, the scientific community has come up with new treatment technologies that are safer, more effective, and in the long run provide higher cost savings.

By supporting this amendment you will be ensure the protection of the health and the environment of hundreds of thousands of American citizens.
