Applications are now being accepted for the 2022 summer internship programs in biomedical research at the NIH. Internships generally cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students arriving at the NIH in June.

In 2022, we hope to welcome summer interns in-person to our NIH campuses; this is dependent on the course of the coronavirus pandemic and we will update information and the website as soon as we have definitive information.

Eligibility: The 2022 summer internship programs are for students who

  • will be 17 years of age or older on June 15, 2022,
  • are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, AND
  • are enrolled at least half-time in high school or an accredited college (including community college) or university as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student at the time of application*, OR
  • are high school or college graduates at the time of application and have been accepted into an accredited college or university degree-granting program for the fall semester.

All summer interns will also be expected to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

*Individuals who are U.S. permanent residents must be attending or have been accepted into institutions in the U.S.

Students with disabilities; students from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis (Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Native Americans, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders); students who identify as LGBTQ; students who are Pell-grant eligible; and others disadvantaged by circumstances that have negatively impacted their educational opportunities, including recent natural disasters, are encouraged to apply.

The summer internship programs at the NIH include

  • SIP, the Summer Internship Program, for individuals who are high school graduates and are enrolled in a college, graduate, or professional school program at the time or application OR will begin such a program in the fall
  • HS-SIP, the High School Summer Internship Program, for individuals who are juniors or seniors in high school (and have not graduated) at the time of application.
  • Summer subprograms, in both SIP and HS-SIP, designed to increase the diversity of the biomedical workforce.
  • Several NIH Institutes and Centers run their own summer programs. All of them require that you complete the general SIP application, but they may have other requirements or eligibility criteria as well. Find a list of programs here.

SIP, HS-SIP, and the subprograms have different eligibility criteria and different application and letter of reference deadlines. Be certain to read the program descriptions carefully!
