CDC-NCEH-2013-0001
Project Description:
A fellowship opportunity is available in the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC/NCEH is unique in the federal government because of its particular focus on public health issues related to the environment. NCEH’s research covers the human lifespan, from preventing birth defects and developmental disorders to helping an increasingly older population minimize the impact of disabilities on their lives. DLS develops and applies laboratory science to prevent disease and death caused by exposure to toxic substances, and to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of selected chronic diseases.

Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, the selected participant will use state-of-the-art equipment to address topics relevant to public health. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop and apply new methods to characterize and quantitate biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases. This includes assessing a variety of markers in biological specimens (such serum or urine) and developing reference materials.

The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications:
Current college students who plan on majoring in chemistry or biology and have taken courses in general chemistry or biology may apply.

How to Apply:

To be considered, please send your application, a current CV/resume, an official transcript, and two references to the attention of DeAnna Copeland at DeAnna.Copeland@orau.org. Please reference CDC-NCEH-2013-0001 in all communications.
