The Exploratorium is hiring for two Senior Science Writer positions right now, and for one of them we are particularly interested in hiring a native Spanish speaker. However, Spanish-speakers would be welcome in either position.

You can find out more and apply by visiting our jobs page: https://www.exploratorium.edu/about/jobs/current-openings

The one listed as a part-time position would be to help us to develop exhibition content for a museum of science and art in south Texas (though the position would be based in San Francisco). Excellent science communication skills are a must; previous museum experience is not required.

The job posting is pasted below.

Thanks,

Kevin Boyd

Senior Science Writer (Part-Time)

SUMMARY

Science Writers are responsible for helping to create engaging learning experiences in science, art, and human perception, through exhibition concept development, exhibit content development, and by translating complex concepts into accurate, interesting, concise, and audience-appropriate language. They have a deep understanding of science and the scientific process, but are also strong communicators with editorial expertise. Science writers independently research, write, curate, and evaluate science content for exhibitions and exhibit labels and signage. They may also contribute to digital projects including websites and interactives, as well as events and publications. They collaborate with scientists, artists, teachers, exhibit and new media developers, visitor researchers, engineers, and graphic and 3D designers. They are often expected to develop conceptual frameworks and narratives to support the visitor experience in projects for our Global Collaborations partners. The Senior Science Writer position differs from the Science Writer position in its emphasis on self-direction and independent production of high-quality science writing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Writing: Research, curate, edit, interview, and consistently develop engaging, accurate, and current science content for a variety of projects with minimum supervision.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with scientists, artists, developers and designers, visitor research and evaluation, and other staff on exhibitions, digital projects, activities, and programs.
  • Concept Development and Planning: In collaboration with Creative Director, Project Lead, Principal Investigator, Lead Science Writer, and/or Project Director, define and articulate conceptual frameworks for exhibition projects, including organizational structures and storylines. Propose, research, and vet scientific content. On Global Collaborations projects, participate as needed in client meetings and presentations. Assist in revising conceptual documents based on client feedback.
  • Exhibit Content Development and Curation: Propose ideas for exhibits, informational graphics, videos, and other elements of an exhibition, and work with exhibit developers, designers, and media producers as needed to research, validate, and develop such elements.
  • Iteration: Incorporate feedback and edits from others and rewrite copy as needed.
  • Consultation: Provide science content, science writing, and consulting expertise to other staff and departments as well as partner institutions locally, nationally, and globally.
  • Flexibility: Adapt to project constraints with proactive solutions; work comfortably and productively on a range of projects including grant-based work, exhibits and exhibitions, events, digital projects, and projects with external partners.
  • Judgment: Make timely science writing and editorial decisions; show strong creative discernment and good discipline in editing ideas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree or higher in a scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years’ professional science writing experience including researching, interviewing, rewriting, editing, and proofreading
  • Experience translating complex science content for a non-scientist audience, preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Experience planning and developing content for museum exhibitions or other large-scale science communication projects
  • A professional portfolio of published pieces and/or museum credits
  • A tactful, cooperative attitude when editing, and willingness to be edited by others
  • Demonstrated dedication to accuracy and detail; willing to work through multiple revisions of projects
  • Talent for collaboration and effective teamwork, and demonstrated ability to work with people at all levels of an organization
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines, juggle competing priorities, and navigate sometimes complex processes with minimal supervision
  • Ability to build work estimates for projects and complete work within budgeted hours
  • Experience with or fluency in a Latin American or Asian language or culture a plus
