The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is a Seattle based nonprofit biomedical research organization led by co-founder and President Lee Hood, MD, PhD. ISB’s mission is to revolutionize science with a powerful systems approach to predict and prevent disease and enable a sustainable environment.

From its inception in 2000, education has been an integral part of ISB’s mission. Under the leadership of Valerie Logan Hood, ISB created the Center for Inquiry Science which today, as the Logan Center for Education, promotes contemporary science, engineering and mathematics education and works to make quality STEM education available for all. On an annual basis the Center works with 30 school districts in the Puget Sound area as well as with many of Washington’s institutions of higher education offering professional development for teachers, administrators, and undergraduate faculty.

In addition to the Logan Center, ISB is home to multiple education efforts.  ISB’s Center for Systems Biology has extensive training, professional development, and outreach programs.  Also, Senior Vice-President and Director of Research and Education Nitin Baliga has spearheaded the award winning Systems Education Experiences (SEE)– program and has recently launched Project Feed 1010.

All of ISB’s education programs are self-sustaining, relying on grants, fee for service contracts, and philanthropic donations. To synthesize, advance and create new K-12 and undergraduate education programs, a new Vice President of Education position reporting to the Sr VP and Director of Research & Education has been created. Concurrently serving as the Director of the Logan Center, the individual selected for this position will be responsible for developing strategies to fund, advance and promote all ISB STEM programs, ensure the continued success of the Logan Center, and maintain and develop new partnerships with school districts, community colleges, universities, community groups, state and federal agencies, corporations, and foundations.

Key Job Responsibilities:

As the Vice President of Education

•Develop and update an ISB education strategic plan that aligns with ISB’s mission and vision and incorporates contemporary educational research and best-practices in education

•Provide broad oversight and evaluation for all ISB education programs to ensure programs are aligned with ISB’s education strategic plan  

•Serve as liaison to regional and national stakeholders ensuring partnering and alignment with appropriate state and national education programming

•Work with ISB’s Development and Communications offices to identify and secure philanthropic funding, host special events, and promote ISB’s education programs

•Identify, secure and administer grants for education programs

•Manage special projects

As the Director of the Logan Center for Education

•Ensure programmatic excellence in all services provided by the Logan Center and develop and implement comprehensive program evaluation

•Manage the Logan Center including responsibility for securing philanthropic, grant and other funding, managing the Center’s annual budget, and developing forward-looking revenue and cost projections. Responsible for the Center’s grant and contract compliance and reporting.

•Recruit and retain outstanding staff for the Logan Center. Set standards for and evaluate the performance of staff and provide recommendations to Human Resources on Center staff retention, promotion and salary adjustments. Oversee the professional development of Center staff.

Qualifications:

•A MA/MS in science, science education or related field plus a minimum of 10 years of working in science education, preferably in programs focused on educational change.  PhD strongly preferred.  

•Demonstrated ability to: secure grants and raise funds for education programs;  work effectively with educators at all levels (teachers, administrators and faculty); form and maintain productive partnerships with school districts and institutions of higher education, non-profit groups and business partners

•Experience in managing complex educational reform programs in education; proven leadership, communication and team building skills; highly developed ability to prepare written communications and proposals; demonstrated competence in budget management.

•Must have good interpersonal and communications skills; able to work effectively with a variety of people in a diverse workforce; adaptable to changing work requirements; willing to multi-task; high degree of professional integrity; strong client service orientation. 

•All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc.  Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint at a functional level.
