New face of engineering is from UPR-Mayaguez

One of the New Faces of Engineering at the international level is from UPR-Mayaguez. Yazeli Elizabeth Cruz Rivera, a first year graduate student in the Industrial Engineering Graduate Program was selected as one of the New Faces of Engineering 2016.

The effect of coffee farming on erosion and its impact on marine life is the research problem that Yasiel A. Figueroa Sánchez is studying as he completes his masters degree in Interdisciplinary Envrionmental Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus.

Turabo University Team Represents Puerto RIco in Wind Energy Competition

The Juracán Energy Team of Turabo University is the only team from Puerto Rico to participate in the Collegiate Wind Competition of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Dr. Juan A. Rivero Quintero: Founder of the only Zoo in Puerto Rico

Dr. Juan A. Rivero Quintero was born on March 5, 1923 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. His great preparation and passion for his work helped him make great controbutions to the advancement of Biology in Puerto Rico. One of his most notable achievements is the opening of the Zoo at Mayaguez in 1954.

Successful State MATHCOUNTS Competition in PUERTO RICO

More than 20 institutions and 200 students participated in the state final competition.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, – The MATHCOUNTS® competition helps develop excellence in mathematics for middle school students. This competition was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico and organized by the Local Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). The winning team will be representing Puerto Rico in the national final competition.

El Yunque y su diversidad

This essay by Melissa Cabrera Ruíz, a high school student at the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez (CROEM), won first place in the national science essay competition of the International Congress of the Spanish Languague (CILE 2016). The essay discusses the biodiversity of El Yunque the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Forest System.

Viva, Science in Spanish!

Last week Ciencia Puerto Rico took part in the VII International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE 2016). Through a historical collaboration CienciaPR and CILE celebrated that for the first time science had a prominent role in this Congress, the largest and most important celebration of the Spanish-language. CienciaPR and CILE collaborated in the evaluation of science essays for a national science essay competition and in the participation in an international colloquium about the Spanish language and science.

Student team from RUM wins regional competition of the American Society of Civil Engineers

The group of students from the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Campus that represented Puerto Rico in the southern regional competitions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, won the majority of the awards, including the prestigious Overall for the concrete canoe and steel bridge. This achievement classified them to move to the national competition where they will represent the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Puerto Rico in may and june of this year.

Dr. Pablo Iván Altieri is recognized for his scientific labor

Math Professor from UPR receives prestigious international award

The contributions of Luis F. Cáceres, Mathematics Professor from the Univeristy of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, to advance the Special Mathematics Olympics of Puerto Rico (OMPR) and Latin America have made him deserving of a prestigious international award from the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions (WFNMC).
