CienciaPR Creates Digital Book "Science and Solidarity" to Celebrate Community Leaders

San Juan, PR – In celebration of Community Leaders and Groups Week (Semana del Líder y los Grupos Comunitarios y de la Autogestión Comunitaria), which takes place the first week of March, the non-profit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) today published the digital book Science and Solidarity: Stories of Community Leaders in Puerto Rico (Ciencia y solidaridad: Historias de líderes comunitarios en Puerto Rico). The text highlights the stories of 11 community leaders who use science to address the needs and priorities of their communities.

The Coalición de Residentes de Vivienda Publica del Área Metropolitana (CRVPAM; Coalition of Public Housing Residents of the Metropolitan Area, in English) in collaboration with Laboratorio de Ciencia Comunitaria, a program of the non-profit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), celebrated today the “Feria de Servicios para Adultos Mayores” (Services Fair for Seniors). The event was the culmination of a series of workshops and activities to provide tools, training, and alternatives to improve the quality of life of older adults through science and community engagement.

This past June and July, Ciencia Puerto Rico was fortunate to host three interns of the PARACa (from the Spanish acronym for Empowerment and Retention of Agents of Change) Summer VISTA Fellowship 2023 (PARACa). We want to congratulate Isaac Correa Pagán, Natalia Ramos Rivera, and Marylys Rivera for successfully completing their internships and thank them for their valuable contributions to our team!

Antiracist Recommendations from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Include Contributions from CienciaPR

The new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine recognizes that racism has produced systemic barriers that limit full participation in science and medicine and offers concrete actions to break them down, thus promoting justice and inclusion. Puerto Rican scientist Dr. Giovanna Guerrero Medina, was chosen for her expertise and leadership as executive director of the organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) to be a member of the committee that issued the document.

Experts question Department of Health's inaction on COVID-19 and offer recommendations to improve public health response

A group of health professionals, scientists and physicians questioned the lack of action by the local Department of Health in the face of the high number of COVID-19 infections in Puerto Rico and offered specific recommendations to improve the public health response at this point in the pandemic. The statements were made during a press conference organized by the NGO and scientific collective Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR, www.cienciapr.org). CienciaPR urges people to keep up with masking and prevention to mitigate the next COVID-19 surge

In light of the flexibilization of COVID-19 mitigation measures in Puerto Rico, the NGO and scientific collective Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR, www.cienciapr.org) is calling on the public not to lower their guard and be prepared to respond to a possible surge in cases. This comes following a recent increase in the positivity rate in the country and ongoing surges in Europe and Asia caused by the Omicron subvariant BA.2.

Under the slogan "Puerto Rico es ciencia" (Puerto Rico is Science), the scientific organization Ciencia Puerto Rico launched a new donation program called "Cómplices de la Ciencia Boricua" (Ciencia Boricua Allies). In addition to celebrating 15 years of the non-profit collective, “Puerto Rico es ciencia” seeks to promote donations and support the organization’s sustainability so that they can continue putting science in service of Puerto Rico. 

CienciaPR’s Aquí Nos Cuidamos named Breakthrough of the Year at prestigious international event

San Juan, PR – Aquí Nos Cuidamos, a community engagement project of the nonprofit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), was named Breakthrough of the Year 2021 in the category of Science Engagement at the Falling Walls Science Summit, celebrated November 7-9 in Berlin, Germany. This prestigious award honors the most outstanding project breaking the wall between science and society.

CienciaPR welcomes three new fellows!

During the month of September our team welcomed three new members: Alondra Caraballo Franco and Ariadna Rubio Lebrón, both fellows of the PARACa-AmeriCrops program of Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción and Andrea López Merced, who is part of the Civic Science Fellowship supported by the Rita Allen Foundation.

Alondra and Andrea will be supporting CienciaPR in communications and fundraising projects for the next year. Meanwhile, Andrea will be conducting an 18-month assessment of CienciaPR's impact and culturally relevant communication strategies and creating practical resources to increase the civic engagement of scientists.
