Career Awards for Medical Scientists

Five-year $700,000 awards for physician-scientists to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research.  Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible. Awards are made to degree-granting institutions in the U.S. or Canada on behalf of the awardee.

BETHESDA, MD—SEPTEMBER 4, 2013—A matched-peer controlled study of science faculty at minority-serving institutions (MSI) shows that an outside mentoring support program increased the number of peer-reviewed research publications, the number of federal grants, and the variety of professional and curricular activities of those who participated versus academic peers who did not.

Born in the mountainous central region of Puerto Rico, Johary Rivera-Meléndez was inspired to study chemistry through the urging of her high school chemistry teacher in Orocovis. However, after being accepted at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, it was the support she received from her professors that helped her keep that dream alive. “It has not been an easy journey, but I have had amazing people around me who have motivated me to keep on going,” says Rivera-Meléndez, who is pursuing a Ph.D.
