The Department of Health and several pediatric medical organizations clarified that all vaccines currently administered to children do not contain the preservative thimerosal, a mercury derivative. Most adult vaccines, except a few against the flu and rabies also do not carry thimerosal. This preservative was removed from vaccines in 2001, as a preventive measure before its safety could be confirmed. Since then, several studies have shown no proof to link thimerosal to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's or autism. Parents should vaccinate their children in order to protect them and others from serious infectious diseases.
