Three Generations of Educators from Arecibo Showed Students How Science and Technology Transform Daily Life

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Students from the public school system, along with sons and daughters of Eaton employees, enjoyed a unique learning experience thanks to a collaboration between EATON and Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR). The initiative aimed to bring new generations closer to the world of manufacturing and demonstrate how science and technology impact everyday life.

During the tour, participants observed production processes up close, learned how materials are transformed into energy supplies, and discovered the importance of safety, innovation, and teamwork in the industry. “We were glad to share our experiences with the students and to show them the diversity of opportunities within STEM careers in the energy industry,” said Dr. Mayda Graulau Santiago, Human Resources Manager at EATON, Arecibo.

The visit also offered students a glimpse into the future of energy. Guided by Dr. Abniel Machín, Director of the Science Education Unit at CienciaPR, they explored interactive models of solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy, while also receiving information on emerging careers in STEM and renewable energy. Invited organizations complemented the experience with informational booths that broadened students’ exposure to different professional pathways.

A special moment of the event was the gathering of three generations of educators: former Secretary of the Department of Education, Dr. Yanira Raíces; Carmen Correa, who was once Raíces’ student; and Dr. Liz Hernández, Program Manager at CienciaPR, who had been Correa’s student. Together, they accompanied a fourth generation of young people interested in STEM. “It is inspiring to see how knowledge is passed from generation to generation and how every effort truly matters. Thanks to spaces like this, students can see how the concepts they learn in class apply to their daily lives,” said an emotional Carmen Correa, teacher at Manuel Ruiz Gandía School of the ORE Arecibo region.

For her part, Dr. Liz Hernández emphasized: “We want students to see the relevance of science and its importance, to meet industries firsthand, and to be able to picture themselves as future STEM professionals.”

With this visit, EATON and Ciencia Puerto Rico reaffirmed their commitment to education and youth development on the island. More than just a tour, the experience represented an investment in the talent of new generations and in strengthening the STEM ecosystem in Puerto Rico.
