"This is the second edition of the BioMed Battle Team magazine, published by the Biomedical Research Education Program (BREP), a federal program created in 2003 with the purpose of attracting young people to the study of sciences, by means of innovating initiatives."
Diabetes affects more than 10% of the Puerto Rican population and is the third greatest cause of deaths in the Island. Students in the 27 state and three private schools that receive the magazine will get information about diabetes and related research conducted in Puerto Rico, through interviews with to scientists and researchers.
The magazine has been a success, and is trying to interest students in biomedical investigation, but at the same time it provides them with information on medical conditions of great prevalence in Puerto Rico.
"With the allocation of $1 million, other two magazines will be published. But MSC-UPR is seeking the collaboration of the private industry to publish other two editions. Each edition consists of 10.000 copies in English and Spanish, because the magazine is distributed outside the Island."
"The next comic strips, that include guides for the teacher, will talk about AIDS, cancer and stroke. These are between the main causes of death of Latinos and Puerto Ricans"
"In addition to the magazine, BREP has summer internship programs, professional development for teachers programs and community outreach programs." You can visit the magazine at BREP page
