The map has showy photos of coastal areas and submarine inhabitants of the Island, and offers information on lands, fauna and flora that can be found through the Island.
The idea to create this map, said Eduardo Regis, director of the Foundation Juan A. Regis for the Preservation of the Marine Life of Puerto Rico, arises from the need to offer an instrument so that Puerto Ricans and those who are boat owners, enjoy from a guide to the places and natural resources around the coasts and how to enjoy them without damaging them.
“Our inquietude is that the public does not know how to preserve the natural resources. If they are not known, they won’t be valued, and if they are not valued is impossible to conserve them”, said Regis.
This map is the first official project of this ecological foundation, created a year ago by this architect and his brothers in honor to its late father, who was a sea lover.
According to Regis, 10,000 units of the first edition were issued, and the Toyota Foundation subsidized the production expenses of the map.
In additions, Regis himself informs about coral reefs, sea floors, endemic species of the Island, natural reserves, and endangered species like marine turtles, manatees, dolphins, and whales.
Also, the map offers information for the correct use of diverse boats and the suitable anchoring to avoid damage to the marine habitats, in addition to a directory of navies and telephones for sea-related emergencies.
The map “Our coasts: an interpretative map” will soon be translated to English, and it is possible to obtain it free through the Information Centers of the Company of Tourism of Puerto Rico, the United States Power Squadron of Puerto Rico, the Nautical Club of Ponce, the Crab Yacht Club, the Navy of Puerto Real, the National Coast Guard, the Puerto Chico Marina and the Sport Club of the West, among other nautical effects stores.
