2019 NASA Pathways Internship in Science Communication, Multimedia and Social Media

Application window April 1-8, Internships start August 2018

Unofficial Application Guide: http://bit.ly/2U5lGj7PNASAPathways

We are excited to be able to offer a somewhat rare “Pathways” internship for students interested science communication, science journalism, multimedia, social media, or public engagement. Pathways is really more of a long-term work study program and may be a good fit for students wishing to work on more in-depth projects or explore multiple facets of science storytelling.

"NASA invites students working towards degrees in journalism, communications, media relations, science writing, immersive journalism, or broadcast journalism, to participate in our science storytelling program - before you graduate. You'll gain on the job experience as you create and share content from some of NASA's most exciting science missions: mind-bending results from the Hubble Space Telescope; new views of our surprisingly dynamic Moon from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter; stories of our changing planet from NASA's Earth satellites; and breaking news from the surface of the Sun. Our internships are designed to give students broad exposure to the many moving parts of our busy newsroom. Students wishing to explore the intersection between print, web, broadcast journalism and social media are encouraged to apply. Duties: writing, editing, pitching, recording, creating, crunching, captioning, surfing, shooting, feeding, porting, posting, snapping, designing, updating, networking, texting, tweeting, tracking, designing, building, playing, mashing, and exploring.”

Pathways Internships

Pathways interns have become science writers, video producers, communications campaign managers, and social media mavens at NASA. Pathways internships are very similar to our classic communications internships, but students stay longer, work on bigger interdisciplinary projects, and of course gain more responsibilities.

Graduate and undergraduate students are both eligible, but you must be in school, or between programs.

Pathways Internships are flexible.

Some students have worked in year-long sessions, or intermittently, semester by semester.

Pathways positions pay pretty well – students are on the federal GS Pay Scale [GS-3 through GS-7] depending on level of education/experience.

Many students feel they are getting so much from the internship, they choose to extend their graduation date to give them more time to add to their body of work.

Students who begin Pathways as undergraduates may remain in the program through graduate school. We’ve had interns start as undergraduate sophomore or juniors and stay three or more years as they work through their thesis projects.

Most students choose to work full time, though students in local programs may take a class or two and work part time.

Tuition assistance may be available.

You must be a US citizen.

You must be 16 years old.

The positions are federal positions and have a chance to lead to long-term positions at NASA.

We are asking that students be prepared to spend at least a year of time in the internship.  This could be a contiguous block of time or smaller chunks that add up to a year.  If you are looking for a three-month internship, this is not the position for you.
