http://apply.pewscholars.org The Pew Charitable Trusts invites you to nominate a candidate from the research faculty of your institution for the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences award for 2012. The Pew Scholars Program supports assistant professors of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The award provides $240,000 in flexible support - $60,000 per year for a four-year period. In 2012, the Pew Charitable Trusts will name 22 Pew Scholars. Several important features of the Pew Scholars Program are highlighted below: 1. The Pew Scholars Program is open to individuals with a doctorate in medicine or biomedical sciences. As of November 1, 2011, nominees must hold full-time appointments at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent. On July 1, 2012, they must not have been in such an appointment for more than three years, whether or not such appointments were on a tenure track. The program does not monitor or restrict percent effort. 2. Individuals with committed support from similar private foundation awards in excess of $50,000 a year for the period extending beyond the first two years of the Pew Scholarship, or June 30, 2014, are ineligible. Individuals who are chosen to be Pew Scholars may not simultaneously be supported by similar private foundation awards in excess of $50,000 a year during the first two years of the Pew support. These awards include but are not limited to those of the Searle, Damon Runyon, Rita Allen, Ellison, and Kimmel foundations. Institutions are strongly encouraged to nominate a candidate who is not applying for and is not already funded by such awards. Funding from the NIH, other government sources, and project grants from public charities and nonprofit associations such as the American Cancer Society do not pose a conflict with the Pew Scholars Program. A complete description of the program, its terms, and eligibility requirements may be found atwww.pewscholars.org. 3. The funds may be used, at the discretion of the Pew Scholar, for personnel, equipment, supplies, or travel directly related to the Scholar’s research, in whatever way will best advance his or her research endeavors. However, not more than $10,000 of the annual award may be used for the Scholar’s salary and benefits. Indirect costs may be taken up to a maximum of 8% of the total award over the life of the grant. Additionally, we ask that you consider all possible nominees from any of your institution’s affiliated units and campuses unless they have been separately invited to nominate a candidate. Please ensure that a comprehensive internal selection process is communicated throughout the relevant campuses and departments. The process should evaluate any eligible applicants equitably and carefully identify the most appropriate and competitive nominee to the Pew Scholars Program. While the award decisions are based solely on the application merit, applications from women and minorities are strongly encouraged. The 2012 application will be available online starting August 1, 2011 at http://apply.pewscholars.org. The nominee chosen by your institution should be instructed to email Anita Pepper at apepper@pewtrusts.org to obtain the username and password designated for your institution. The application deadline is November 1, 2011. We look forward to receiving an application from your institution’s nominee in November. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 215-531-8134. Sincerely, Ann Million Director, Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences | The Pew Charitable Trusts p: 215.531.8134 | www.pewscholars.org
