The Symposium on Health Informatics in Latin America and the Caribbean (SHILAC 2015) bridges medicine and computing to showcase health informatics research in Latin America and the Caribbean. The symposium’s hallmark event is its international and interdisciplinary brainstorming session to identify the most pressing health issues facing the region today.

For the first time, San Juan, Puerto Rico will be host city for this important event that will draw business and medical professionals, developers, decision makers, government officials from a variety of areas as well as programming students to discuss and plan technological solutions to some of the most pressing of health issues. The conference will feature renowned speakers and leaders in Health Informatics from Latin and North America to inspire lively discussion and creative solutions. Simultaneously, a hackathon named Hacking Medicine in the Caribbean will feature a team-based approach to implementing some of these solutions.

We are soliciting papers and extended abstracts that address all aspects of health informatics in Latin America and the Caribbean. Any research that speaks to the health disparities in Latin America and the Caribbean and helps to build collaborations to identify issues in medicine and healthcare in the region is welcomed, including but not limited to the following topics:

7.     Clinical informatics

8.     Healthcare Management informatics

9.     Medical informatics

12.   Nursing informatics

13.   Mobile Health

14.   Big Data Analytics

15.   Health Data Visualization

16.   Ethical and Policy Issues

17.   Workflow and Human Factors

18.   Healthcare Policy Issues

19.   Informatics Education & Workforce Development

20.   Healthcare Security and Privacy

21.   Simulation and Modeling

22.   Disaster Preparedness and Management

23.   Any research that addresses the objectives of the conference which are to showcase solutions that have worked to address health disparities in Latin America and the Caribbean and to build collaborations to identify and address concerns in medicine and healthcare in these regions.

  

Paper Submission Guidelines

Papers to be presented at the Symposium (maximum 8-pages) will be submitted for a double-blind review by the Program Committee.  The work must be original, and not published previously (abstracts, lectures, thesis permitted). Authors must be registered for the Full Conference Registration fee. Authors must commit to present their paper.

Poster (Extended Abstracts) Submission Guidelines

Extended Abstracts submitted for the poster sessions (maximum 2-pages) will be submitted to double-blind review by the Program Committee. The Abstracts will be published in the proceedings. Authors must be registered for the Full Conference Registration fee. Authors must commit to present their poster.

Publications

The proceedings of the works presented will published in the Journal of Health Sciences of Puerto Rico (http://prhsj.rcm.upr.edu/).  The journal is online and open access.  It is published by the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus and is indexed in PubMed, Index Medicus, MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Index Pharmacus, Science Citation Index Expanded (SciSearch®) and Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition.  While papers may be submitted in English, Spanish or Portuguese, the journal will only publish papers in English, but contain an abstract in the three languages.

Presentation Policy

All authors are expected to present their work within the Symposium schedule.  Authors whose papers are accepted will be eligible for a travel scholarship to SHILAC 2015.
